Iris Murdoch - The Bell |
Iris Murdoch’s ‘The Bell’ is her first directly religious novel. She explores the nature of human spirituality within the context of a lay community based round an enclosed order of nuns. Murdoch is fascinated by the various ways in which humans torment each other. She establishes here a moral world, but with the overlay of a thriller. There are near-drownings, suicide and raging passions, but also discussions of moral problems and ideas.
Sometimes Murdoch’s mixed up intellectuals can irritate, but this is a powerful examination of the incestuous world of people with not enough to do!
