Colette - Gigi |
Written in 1944 by an aging Colette, the novel explores a period of her own life fifty years after the event. The charming Gigi is fifteen, a seeming innocent in a family of women who ‘do not expect to marry’. The novel explores the quandary of the fin-de-siecle Frenchwoman of meagre means, the need to think strategically to secure a husband or face a lonely life as a woman ‘with a reputation’. A wonderful window into a life and a world that no longer exists in the same degree. |
