| Rudyard Kipling - Plain Tales from the Hills |
| From his early life in India Kipling retained a deep love for the land’s colour and exotic richness. Long before ‘The Jungle Book’ and the ‘Just So Stories’ he collected these tales of colonial follies, vanities and real suffering. They are a far cry from the celebratory patriotism that surrounded the Empire at the time.
He writes with haunting passion and personal experience about the cultural, racial and sexual barriers of the day. He knew the opium dens well! But also the tragedies of the young and inexperienced men and women who came out from ‘Blighty’ to tame a resistant continent.
