| William Shakespeare - Love's Labour's Lost |
| A Renaissance humanist comedy about, mainly, language itself. Odd and difficult, clever and funny, it is rarely performed. A king and his three lords renounce the love of ladies in favour of celibacy and study. But along comes a Princess with her three ladies who persuade them otherwise! There are postponed courtships and courtly speeches, but no resolution and no main character with whom we can identify. But it is the most fabulous exploration in our language of the meaning of words…especially the BIG word, LOVE. The ladies, more verbally adroit and more constant, are the victors in this battle for true meaning. |
