Anton Chekhov - The Cherry Orchard |
Anton Chekhov\'s short life produced a mass of work. There are wonderful short stories that could not be by anyone else, and unforgettabe plays. \'The Cherry Orchard\' was his last play and he wrote it against the strain of impending death from tuberculosis. His people, he said, are \'as complex, and yet just as simple as they are in life.\'
He belonged to a period of tremendous social change in Russia, yet his work is never overtly political. There is no more dispassionate, yet passionate, writer on the planet. He never judges...he just shows! |
