Hans Christian Andersen - The Little Mermaid |
One of Andersen’s best loved tales, romanticised and sanitised in a Disney film. All children know about the mermaid who loved and saved the life of a human prince. She pays the price of having human legs, by losing her power of speech so cannot tell her love.
Her agonies on land do not win her prince, but her refusal to kill him in order to return to the sea, win her the opportunity, one day, to have a human soul. She becomes an air spirit, who as an essence, brings relief to human suffering. Andersen’s tale is equally appealing to adults and children. It is both a wonderful story and a sensitive exploration of the eternal human journey. Spiritual development comes at a price!
