Miguel de Cervantes - Don Quixote |
Is this really a knockabout account of a mad Spanish gentleman and his cowardly peasant squire? A best seller from its first publication in 1605, ‘Don Quixote’ has been the bedside reading of every great writer. Shakespeare intended to base a play on Book 1. I wanted to explore what it is about this epic that has come to represent universal human nature. And what it was about Cervantes, the courageous soldier, always impoverished, that enabled him to reveal a myth of the tragic hero. Quixote always defending man’s nobler aspirations, accompanied by Sancho Panza, the indefatigable friend. |
