Charles Dickens - A Christmas Carol |
In 1843, Dickens hit upon the idea of writing a story that would amuse but alert people to the desperate needs of England’s poor. He wrote it in 6 weeks while walking the night streets of London, alternately laughing and crying. He gave Ebeneezer Scrooge many of his own life experiences, and even Tiny Tim had an origin in Dickens’s family history. This short story is a unique example of the ‘inspired’ book, one that literally ‘breathed into’ Dickens. This lecture explores where it came from in terms of Dickens’s own life and obsessions. |
